The “Führer durch das Museum Godeffroy” (Guide to the Museum Godeffroy), published in 1882, describes the Māori war canoe prow that was displayed among spears from Easter Island, the Admiralty Islands, and New Britain: “Beakhead ornament (carving) from a war canoe from New Zealand. The human figure sticks out its tongue, similarly to the way this was done during a stage of the New Zealand war dance to mock the enemy.”
