Lan Ying is a painter in Ming dynasty, courtesy name Tianshu, pseudonym Diesou, born in Qiantang (aka Hangzhou). He takes Shen Zhou as his teacher, and also models on the styles of masters from Tang, Song and Yuan dynasties. His favorite one is Huang Gongwang. He take painting as his lifelong career. He is good at painting as well as calligraphy, specialized in flowers and birds, plums and bamboos, and particularly known for landscape paintings. He finally has a style of his own, featuring vigorous brushstrokes, as famous as Shen Zhou and Wen Zhengming. He is considered as one of the most unique and influential artists in Ming dynasty,
This landscape scroll is painted in the style of two ancient masters in Five Dynasties, Dong Yuan and Ju Ran. The famous connoisseur Xu Bangda identifies it as a top level one in Lan’s middle age.
