Gwangju Gazebo

Gwangju Design Biennale

Gwangju Design Biennale
Gwangju Metropolitan City, South Korea

The “Gwangju Gazebo” demonstrates how innovations in both fabrication tech-nologies and design tools can make new architectural worlds tangible. The Gazebo is designed using a purely computational process that successively subdivides a simple form until a highly ornamental form emerges. A single surface spawns thousands of intricate branches, creating a porous, multi-layered structure with spatial depth. These forms are materialized through amalgamated laser-cut sheets. The Gwangju Gazebo is a testament to and celebration of a new kind of architecture that leaves behind traditional paradigms of rationalization and standardization and instead emphasizes the viewer’s perception-evoking marvel, curiosity and bewilderment.
