Built for the Great Western Railway, the Carriage Works was constructed in 1870-2 and extended in 1872-3. As early as 1871 it was reported that 1,100 men were employed in this part of the factory complex. The carriages were made in the upper floor, which was level with the main railway line. The lower level included a vast canteen.
