Arlindo Vicente took old themes and made, in fact, new work, singing the epics of the humble people with oil on his canvas, which are documents of an era and lives with neither glory nor history. The social theme interested him, making this one of the most valid chapters of his artistic journey. The “Gypsies” represents a group of figures in a travelling scene: on the first level, the horse with woman sitting on it and pulled by a child; the second level features three other people illustrating this social group; on the third level there is the dry and yellow soil. The warm and solid colors bring into this composition a Neo-Realist narration of a directionless nomadic march, which is somehow conveyed to us by impressions, suggestions, and conditions of soul with lots of truth, feeling and poetry.
