Gypsum “Scepter”

Gypsum occurs in a variety of forms, sometimes with a crystalline structure somewhat like that of quartz, sometimes as flat layers in rock, and other times as “scepters” like this. This variety of gypsum is called “selenite”. It is soft enough to be scratched with your fingernail, and is also fairly flexible. This explains how it got its curved appearance.
