Gül Koklayan Kadın/Woman Smelling a Rose

Çallı, tarihsiz Gül Koklayan Kadın tablosunda bir bahçenin derinliklerinde eski zamanlardan, belki 20. Yüzyılın başlarından bir güzeli betimlemiştir. Resim İngiliz ressam John William Waterhouse’un 1908 Gül’ün Ruhu adlı kadın portresine üslup olarak değilse de yapı olarak ciddi benzerlik gösterir. Ancak Çallı’nın bu sanatçının resimlerini tanıyıp tanımadığına dair bir bilgi yoktur.
Her durumda bir kadının gül koklayışı gözlemlendiğinde usta bir ressamın ulaşacağı bir duruştur bu. Bahçenin bilerek belirsiz bırakılmış gölgeliklerde o dönemin edebiyatından alınma satırlardan fırlamış bir güzeldir bu sanki… Güllerin binyıldır büyüleyen kokusu tuvalin yüzeyinden izleyiciye ulaşır gibidir, mevsimdaş manolyaların kendinden emin kokusunu da yaseminlerin ince ama çalımlı kokusunu da bir hamlede geride bırakan, hatıralarda katmanlar uyaran gül kokusu… Ressam şövalesini hangi bahçeye kurmuştur bilinmez ama bu güzel belki Büyükada’da bir bahçede ya da Çamlıca’da geziniyor oluşu çağrıştırır… Genç kadın gülü koklamaktan çok ona bir öpücük kondurmaktadır, belki sevgilisinin yerine koyarak. Gül mevsiminde vaatlerle dolu yaz bahçesinin kuytu derinliklerinde belki bir hayran tarafından seyredilmenin farkında olarak duran figür, elindeki gülü tutuşundaki zarafet bir yana duruşu da mükemmel kurgulanmıştır. Diğer eliyle usulca gül fidanının dalını tutup gülü koklarken gözlerinin kapalı oluşu, yanağındaki pek hafif pembelik, teninin duruluğu, giysisinin saydamlığı, yaka ve kollardaki danteller, enli kuşağı, başındaki incecik tülün ensede gösterişsizce bağlanışı, altından görünen, yanağı ve enseye düşen saçlar… Bir de çevreleyen güller, pembeler ve beyazlar. Arka planda ulu bir ağacın gerisine gizlenmiş bir ev, hikâyenin bir parçası…

In his undated painting "Woman Smelling a Rose", Çallı portrays a beauty from a bygone era—perhaps the early 20th century—nestled deep within a garden. While not stylistically identical, the composition bears a striking resemblance to English painter John William Waterhouse’s 1908 work *The Soul of the Rose*. However, there is no evidence that Çallı was familiar with Waterhouse’s paintings.

Regardless, the act of a woman smelling a rose—captured with such elegance—is a gesture that any master painter might be drawn to. The shaded, deliberately ambiguous parts of the garden evoke a heroine who seems to have stepped out of the pages of a novel from that era. The rose's scent, which has enchanted for centuries, seems to drift off the canvas, outshining even the confident fragrance of magnolias in bloom or the refined but assertive scent of jasmine. The rose evokes layered memories. We don’t know in which garden the artist set up his easel, but the scene calls to mind a woman strolling through a garden in Büyükada or Çamlıca.

The young woman appears not so much to be smelling the rose as gently kissing it—perhaps imagining it as a stand-in for a lover. Standing in the secluded depths of a summer garden full of promise, she may be aware of being watched by a secret admirer. The elegance with which she holds the flower, the grace of her posture—it is all exquisitely composed. Her eyes are closed as she leans in, lightly grasping the stem with one hand. The faint blush on her cheek, the clarity of her skin, the transparency of her dress, the lace details on the collar and sleeves, the wide sash at her waist, the delicate veil tied simply at the nape of her neck, and the hair that peeks through—falling to her cheek and neck—all add to the poetic stillness. Around her bloom roses in pink and white. In the background, a house partially hidden behind a towering tree hints at a deeper story.
