Portrait of His Excellency Lieutenant General Genaro de Quesada y Mathews, 1st Marquis of Miravalles and Grandee of Spain. He was Director General of the Civil Guard from November 21, 1863 to September 29, 1864, and Inspector General of the Border and Coast Guard Corps (Cuerpo de Carabineros) from October 14, 1866 to January 10, 1867. During his time at the head of the corps, he tried to distance the Civil Guard from any political discord, and was very keen to encourage human contact with personnel stationed at the most remote posts.
