The H.J. Heinz Company originated up the Allegheny River in the town of Sharpsburg, but soon outgrew that space in 1890. Construction of buildings in the new plant complex (pictured here from the Sixteenth Street Bridge) began and were completed in 1898. The new plant became known as “The House of the 57 Varieties.”
