Handheld video games have become increasingly popular since the launch of Nintendo's Game Boy in 1989. The PlayStation Portable (abbreviated PSP) is a seventh generation handheld console developed by Sony Computer Entertainment. It was first launched in Japan in 2004, and has since become the most successful non-Nintendo handheld game system ever sold. It is the first handheld console to use an optical disc format - the Universal Media Disc (UMD) - and boasts a larger than normal viewing screen. The PSP can connect to the PlayStation 2, PlayStation 3, other PSPs and the internet, and has the capability to play music, videos and store photos. In 2007, a slimmer and lighter version of the console was released, aptly titled the PlayStation Portable Slim and Lite.
