Hadrian's Wall was a frontier of the Roman Empire in Britain until circa AD 400. Small forts, or milecastles, were built at regular intervals along its length. Sited on the south side of the wall, they provided crossing points through the wall and could accommodate a small garrison.
Milecastle 39 is also known as Castle Nick. Archaeological excavations there uncovered pottery, coins, swords, lances and gaming boards.
