Domenico Scattola (1814-1876) was born in Verona and devoted himself, in the course of his pictorial activity, to genre painting. In "Hagar in the Desert", the artist's ability to imbue the subjects of his canvases with great emotionality is displayed by gestures and expressions so intense that they verge on the pathos. The painting's academic composition and choice of colors reveal a stylistic link with the paintings of Francesco Hayez.
