The Hammond Chord Organ was an instrument designed for musicmaking in the home. The melody was produced on a short manual or keyboard, the accompanying chords on action keys. The pedals also sounded the root and fifth of the chords. Numerous harmonic colors and rhythmization of the accompaniment were adjustable, as was volume. Pieces for the instrument were written in a special notation devised specifically for it: The melody in notes, the accompanying chords in numbers.
