Hampton Court Maze

London Transport commissioned this poster in 1956 to promote leisure trips to Hampton Court. The witty design was drawn by Frederic Henri Kay Henrion. A stern-looking schoolmistress stands at the centre of the famous Hampton Court maze. She ignores the schoolchildren, who are all lost and howling at different twists and turns of the maze. Her umbrella subtly casts a shadow in the shape of London Transport's roundel. At the bottom of the poster is a limerick: 'A harassed school teacher from Hayes Took her children to Hampton Court Maze, They got thoroughly lost At a moderate cost…' The catchy wording invites the spectator to read on for the next rhyme. Cleverly however, the subsequent text is actually travel information promoting Green Line Coach Services.
