Hand Ax

Lower Paleolithic

Museo Juan Cabré

Museo Juan Cabré
Calaceite, Spain

Lance-shaped hand ax carved from honey-colored flint. There is cortex on the back and side, but the rest is sharp. It was carved with a hard hammer and has fairly straight, regular edges, a sharp point, and a semi-cutting base. A flat, balanced, and well-finished piece characteristic of the Upper (Final) Acheulean—or Micoquian—period.
