The leather of this handbag was embossed to give it the appearance of a more expensive animal skin. Many nineteenth-century manufacturers of luxury goods used exotic and unusual aimal skins for their products, including calfskin, lizard, alligator, crocodile and seal. Leather manufacturers produced inexpensive versions of these luxury products aimed at the lower end of the market.
