This song has mixed messages, for while it laments that 'numbers of Irish boys, may the Lord receive their soul, without a shroud or coffin are buried in one hole', it also urges the financial benefits to dependents of soldiers. These were considerable and such considerations would undoubtedly have been a factor in some cases in influencing the decision of whether or not to enlist.
