Compasses, clocks, compass needles, astrolabes, and other nautical items were taken on the Magellan-Elcano expedition in order to carry out cartographical surveys and calculations while at sea. Compasses were used to draw the nautical charts. According to documentation from the voyage, six pairs were taken.
