The Atari Lynx handheld system was released in the fall of 1989, one month after the release of Nintendo's Game Boy. Atari's system was technologically superior; it was the first handheld with a high resolution color display and ambidextrous controls. However, the Game Boy was less expensive, more compact and had a number of popular games, such as the iconic game Tetris. Atari sold only 2 million Lynx systems, compared to Nintendo's Game Boy which sold more than 100 million units worldwide and was the start of a successful line of Game Boy systems.
