Infinity Ward and Activision paired up again to develop and publish the 2007 installment in the Call of Duty franchise: Call of Duty 4: Modern Warfare. Available on Nintendo DS, PCs, PlayStation 3, Xbox 360, and Wii consoles, this is the first M-rated game in the franchise. Although still a first-person shooter, Modern Warfare moves away from the previous WWII plotline into the year 2011 in the Middle East and Russia. In the single-player campaign, players can choose to view the conflicts through the perspectives of six different characters, including an American Marine and a British SAS commando. Modern Warfare's six multiplayer modes contain a new feature known as a killstreak, where a player gains points for killing enemies without dying in between kills. Achieving a successful killstreak gives the player access to extra amenities such as the ability to call in air strikes. Automatically-restoring health continues to be a feature in Modern Warfare, and no armor or health boosters appear in the game. One of the most noticeable alterations in the game includes the addition of experience points, which act as a leveling system when players make kills or complete objectives. These points can be used to unlock weapons, perks, or modes. Reaching level 55, the highest level in the game, unlocks Prestige mode, in which the player returns to level one with all aids removed. Another important alteration is the fact that this game is the first in the franchise to feature modern weaponry and equipment. Furthermore, the soldiers in Modern Warfare have a class ranking system. As a character rises up the ranks, players can choose their own weapons, attachments, and more. Players can, finally, unlock an epilogue mission after the credits. Modern Warfare received praise from both gamers and critics for its engaging gameplay, story, and effects. The worldwide best-selling game in 2007, Modern Warfare received many awards, including the 2007 Console Game of the Year, Action Game of the Year, and Overall Game of the Year from the Academy of Interactive Arts & Sciences.
