The PlayStation Portable (abbreviated PSP) is a seventh generation handheld console developed by Sony Computer Entertainment. It was first launched in Japan in 2004, and has since become highest-selling handheld video game console not manufactured by Nintendo. It is also the first handheld console to use an optical disc format - the Universal Media Disc (UMD) - and boasts a larger than normal viewing screen. The PSP can connect to the PlayStation 2, PlayStation 3, other PSPs and the internet, and has the capability to play music, movies and store photos. In 2007, a slimmer and lighter version of the console was released, aptly titled the PlayStation Portable Slim and Lite. Another version of the handheld was released in 2009, entitled the PSP Go. It no longer contains a UMD drive, and media is instead downloaded and stored on an internal flash drive.
