The Sony PlayStation 2 is the best-selling video game console of all time, with over 100 million units sold worldwide. The PS2 (as it is commonly known) had a broader age-range appeal than its main rivals, the Nintendo GameCube and the Microsoft Xbox. Released in 2000, the PS2 was backwards-compatible with Sony's previous-generation console, the PlayStation, but featured better graphics and more processing speed. Silent Hill: Origins is one game that showcased the power the PS2 possessed. Japanese developer Konami released this survival horror title in 2007 for both the PS2 and the PSP (PlayStation Portable), and featured a soundtrack provided by composer Akira Yamaoka. The survival horror genre is known for evoking terror and helplessness in the player as a result of the situations in which the character is placed. Silent Hill: Origins serves as a prequel to the original game and introduces Travis Grady as the protagonist. Grady must uncover the secret behind a deceased girl, Alessa Gillespie, by traveling through the fog-enshrouded Silent Hill. The game removed the tank controls?hich let the character pivot when pressing toward the left or right, or in the direction the character is facing when pushing up?hich served to accentuate the dismal atmosphere that pervaded earlier entries in the series. Origins contains the Fog World and the Otherworld. The former is a realm that looks like the real town would if it were not shrouded by fog, while the latter is a dangerous and nightmarish alternate dimension. This is the first game where players can choose to switch between the two dimensions. Silent Hill: Origins is the fifth entry in the franchise, and it has sold nearly half a million copies worldwide.
