Bronze lamp used in the celebration of Hanukkah.
It has geometric and vegetal decoration, horseshoe arches and birds. At the base it has four receptacles, each with two outlets. At the top it has another mobile receptacle, called "samas", which is used to light the lower candles.
The festival of Hanukah, or festival of lights, commemorates the consecration of the Temple of Jerusalem after it had been desecrated by King Antiochus IV. According to legend, Judas Maccabeus, when going to light the sanctuary lamp, saw that there was only a little left, lit it and it remained lit for eight days. In memory of this miracle, a lamp is lit each of the eight days that the festival lasts.
