This Art Nouveau candelabrum, which is also powered not by candles but by oil and wicks, is supported by a rectangular black marble base, in the center of which is inset a round silver plaque with the portrait of Theodor Herzl. Born in Budapest in 1860, Theodor Herzl is considered the founder of political Zionism. We know from his diary that he had a tree in his Vienna apartment for Hanukkah in 1894, which coincided with Christmas, which must have astonished Rabbi Güdemann to some extent. Theodor Herzl met the rabbi's concerns by calling it a "Hanukkah tree."
