Brass bands were a large part of life in colliery villages. They were just one of many activities offered for employees at the mines, as well as their family, to improve their welfare. Brass bands were a popular choice for industries of all kinds, but colliery bands were the most common.
The Hardwick Colliery Band, known as Holmewood Colliery Band after 1947, was established in 1908 and ran until the 1950s. A previous attempt had been made to create a band, but these were unsuccessful. They did win awards during their time.
