Hargobind Khorana became the first Indian American Nobel Prize recipient in 1968 for establishing, with fellow Columbia University scientists Marshall Nirenberg and Robert Holley, how nucleotides in nucleic acids (which carry the genetic code of the cell) control a cell’s synthesis of proteins.
