Harlow Town was established in 1947 to relieve overcrowding in north-east London after the Second World War. Its master plan was created by the architect, town planner and landscape designer Frederick Gibberd. Harlow Town Park was one of four major green 'wedges' designed as part of the master plan to divide the built-up areas and provide easy access to open spaces. It was designed by the landscape architect Sylvia Crowe and opened in 1957. Covering 164 acres the park has a number of gardens, meadow and woodland, and facilities for outdoor recreation. A regeneration of the park was completed in 1916.
