The undated painting Harvest, signed “Namık İsmail” in the Arabic script, is one of two monumental works the artist created on this theme. The larger of the two, dated 1923, is part of the Istanbul Museum of Painting and Sculpture collection, while the smaller version on the same subject belongs to the İşbank Art Collection. The conceptual compositions of the two works are nearly identical, yet subtle differences suggest they depict consecutive moments at the same location. It is plausible that the larger canvas was painted later, as it shows a weary peasant, exhausted from plowing under the scorching sun, stepping down from the threshing board to drink water deeply from a jug.

This work reflects Namık İsmail’s impressionist sensibility, while also drawing strength from bold color patches, revealing the artist’s distinctive style. Set on a threshing floor, the composition features neatly stacked sheaves of grain on one side, while much of the scene is dominated by a process of separating wheat grains from their stalks. This is done by passing over the spread harvest with a threshing board and plow pulled by a pair of oxen. The agricultural tools are guided by peasants dressed in clean clothes. At the side, a wooden, long-handled four-pronged pitchfork (known as a dirgen) and a copper jug used for soaking the straw are placed—everything related to the harvest is present.

What makes this composition particularly interesting is the presence of a calm body of water—whether sea or a large lake—in the background. The placement of a wheat field directly at the water’s edge, though visually uniting beauty and abundance, is not entirely realistic. It suggests the influence of imagination or an intent to idealize. Yet, this element does not feel out of place; instead, it enhances the emotional impact of the scene, speaking to the painter’s success. What the viewer perceives first is the magnificence of abundance—and with it, a sense of hope.

In both paintings, which appear to be studies of consecutive moments, the movement of the oxen remains entirely unchanged, emphasizing that the artist’s main concern was to portray the idealized setting with precision. Namık İsmail has constructed an exceptionally balanced composition, illuminating the entire canvas with a vibrant, heart-stirring yellow so rich in sunlight that the work continues to serve as a powerful visual symbol of Anatolia’s fertile lands to this day.
