The harmonium is a keyboard instrument which has been reduced to a small portable box. This is played by one hand while the other works the bellows. When the bellows are compressed, air passes under the reed vibrating it, thus producing the desired pitch. However, the whole process is controlled by a keyboard that makes it a very simple and hassle-free instrument. It is used as a primary accompaniment in Hindustani classical music and also played in devotional and folk genres.
