Harper's Bazaar Bicycling Costumes

Charles Dana Gibson (1867-1944) modeled his 1890s “Gibson Girl” on his wife Irene Langhorne of Richmond. The Gibson Girl was a modern, athletic woman who cycled through city parks, exercised daily and was emancipated to the extent that she could enter the workplace. The female artist of this 1896 Harper’s Bazaar magazine page was very much inspired by this new American icon.
