This is a harpoon with a pointed metal tip driven into a shaft to impale fish. It consists of a spear attached to a long wooden or bamboo shaft. Most harpoons have one to four sharp spears attached to solid wooden shaft, while some have a rope attached at the other end to recover the spears after being thrown. A harpoon can be thrown or thrusted to impale fish, targeting large fish such as sharks, swordfish, tuna, salmon, and trout. Large harpoons are fired by a gun or a cannon, which is mostly used for hunting whales.
