The first harpoons appeared during the Upper Magdalenian, during the moment of biggest manufacture of bone objects.Of different shapes and sizes, they were attached to a wooden shaft with a string. Its point was retained at the prey due to its hook-shaped teeth.

They were made from rods of deer or reindeer antler. They were made with one or two rows of teeth and it were developed different types of handle with swelling or perforation in the base to attach them to a shaft. Its design was simplified and improved at the end of the Magdalenian and Azilian, manufacturing them on the flat side of a large bone and with a single row of teeth, easier and quicker to make and equally effective.
