York Castle Museum
Eye of York, United Kingdom

Back and breast of heavy weight. Breastplate protrudes forwards, and centre ridge ends in a distinct point. Buff straps, brass buckle with iron tongue at waist. Segmented strips at shoulders have pierced heart designs and a thin leather lining strip which once covered the rivets. Right terminal, attachment strip has a rivet parted from the leather strap. Brass rivets at the collar and bottom edge. Quatrefoil backed hook fastenings at chest. Only decoration is two incised lines about 10-12mm in from each side edges and throat/neck. Some rust pitting. Helmet of triple bar style with two wavy reinforcing bars. Triangular cheek pieces held on by buff leather strip rivetted inside rim. Liner of silk over linen over unknown fibre sewn to later edging strip. False lames on neck. Left side visor arm broken by the rivet, which is jammed. The rear of the helmet has a gold-coloured detail which appears to be a holder for a centre ridge piece. Possibly New Model Army Pattern.
