According to Christian belief, between the Crucifixion and the Resurrection Christ descended triumphantly into hell, bringing salvation to souls held captive there since the beginning of time. Adam and Eve, who exchange touching glances, are seen on the left with Moses behind them. On the arch above the scene is Cerberus, a beast representing the terrors of the underworld.
