1884

National Museum of Australia

National Museum of Australia
Canberra, Australia

Cycling enthusiast Harry Clarke bought this penny-farthing from an antiques dealer in 1983. Once he mastered the art of riding it, he regularly competed in the National Penny Farthing Championships held in Evandale, Tasmania.

In 1988, Clarke and 23 other cycling enthusiasts rode from Melbourne to Sydney in a partial re-enactment of the 1888 journey around the world made by Melbourne penny-farthing cyclists George Burston and Harry Stokes.
