Members of the Hastings and St Leonard's branch of the Women's Suffrage Propaganda League supporting the 'siege' of 1 St Paul's Place, the home of Mrs Darent Harrison. A member of the St Leonards branch of the Tax Resistance League, Mrs Darent Harrison had barricaded herself in her home to prevent bailiffs seizing goods owed by her for failing to pay taxes. Despite the 'siege' the bailiffs eventually gained entry through a pantry window and seized goods to the value of tax owed. Pasted on the wall behind the women are three posters published by the Suffrage Atelier with handwritten messages 'No Surrender,' 'No Vote no Tax' and 'Fight the Good Fight'. The incident was widely reported in the local press giving much needed publicity to the 'Tax Resistance' cause.
