Millicent Rogers, the original owner of this hat, lived in St. Anton in the Arlberg Valley of the Austrian Tyrolean Alps before World War II. This hat could possibly have been commissioned by Rogers, as she enjoyed dressing to suit her locale. Schiaparelli playfully interprets the traditional Tyrolean hat form by sticking multi-colored feathers at rakish angles over the hat form. The end result is humorous and fashionable, two qualities that Rogers enjoyed in her wardrobe and were often featured in Schiaparelli's designs--probably why Rogers was a devoted client.
