Trade cards were sometimes issued in sets, as were the four cards illustrated here and in the previous panel. By placing cards from sets out one at a time, merchants were able to attract repeat customers, who wanted all the cards for their scrapbooks. That boys could be president and girls only the wives of presidents was probably not intended as an idealogical statement but rather simply as a reflection of social reality.
