This head manifests a declared difference in relation to the others: the African mask is less at its origin than is its expressionist propensity, which means that we should refer to it as a head instead of a mask, like in the other cases. The dark tones of the planes that define the face search for volumes from a cubist approach. The abstract and sombre background emphasises the motif and its suffering. A thick border between the face and the background, which takes advantage of the colour of the medium, granting contrast and light, has a more expressionist relation than any of the other heads that Amadeo painted and easily remind us of Rouault's faces, which the artist may have seen in a 1910 solo exhibition in Paris.
