Beck, a major figure of portrait painting in Augsburg from the 1520s onward, was exploring the limits of the medium of drawing in this sheet: by means of color, he approached the impression of painted portraits in a drawing. His curving, slightly downcast upper lids give the sitter a contemplative gaze typical of portraiture of the period.

- Artist Biography: At the beginning of his career, the painter and draftsman was probably active in the workshop of Hans Holbein the Elder (assisting on the Dominican altarpiece in Frankfurt am Main in 1501). In 1503 he is documented as a master in Augsburg. Beck was involved in several of the most important woodcut projects of his day, such as the books Weisskunig and Theuerdank and the Triumphzug (Triumphal procession) for Emperor Maximilian I.
