It is suggested that the sitter for this portrait was Chlöe Boughton Leigh. John had met Chlöe and her sister, Maude, in Paris and they remained friends until John's death. The two sisters returned to England and maintained a long correspondence with the artist. They were both aware of John's precarious finances and sent her frequent gifts of clothing and tea, and even cat canker ointment as the three women were devoted to their feline pets.
