Head of Alexander the Great (336–323 BCE)

Alexander conquered almost the entire Ancient Near East and tried to promote cultural integration throughout his empire. This policy led to the development of the Hellenistic culture, which lies at the foundation of Western civilization. Alexander's personality, physical beauty, and accomplishments brought forth legends that have captivated historians and artists over the generations. His image, with its characteristic curly mane and slightly tilted head, became renowned throughout the Hellenistic world. The drill holes visible in the hair of this sculpture suggest that the reddish curls were originally crowned by a golden wreath.
