Head of Hercules

Unknown

Museu Nacional Arqueològic de Tarragona (MNAT)
Tarragona, Spain

White marble head facing slightly to the left that was part of a now-lost less-than-life-size statue.
It is an image of a young, beardless Hercules, who can be recognised by the skin of the Nemean lion that covers his head. It was inspired by a work of the Greek sculptor Scopas.
The exact place this figure was found is not known and therefore it is not possible to state where it stood in antiquity. It may have been in a public building, but the typology of the sculpture and its size make it more likely to have been part of the decoration of a private house.
