Head of John the Baptist on a Platter

John the Baptist, a preacher, baptized Jesus Christ in the Jordan River and recognized him as the Messiah. He was venerated in a variety of ways, and from the thirteenth century depictions of his severed head on a charger, recalling his violent death, became common. John was spitefully persecuted by Herodias because he had accused her of an unlawful marriage with King Herod. After Herodias’ daughter Salome enthralled Herod with her dancing he promised to give her whatever she wished. Instructed by Herodias, Salome asked for the head of John the Baptist, which was handed to her on a platter. The Berlin piece is notable for its unusual, naturalistic characterization. A hole at the top, closed with a rock crystal, formerly contained a relic.
