Head of the Bishop Tommaso d'Andrea

Gano di Fazio1303 - 1305

Fondazione Musei Senesi

Fondazione Musei Senesi
Siena, Italy

The head resembles the Tommaso d'Andrea (bishop in Pistoia, died in 1303) in a very naturalistic attitude, that suggests the possible use of a funeral mask for the sculpture itself. The same portrait could be seen in the large monument devoted to the bishop thanks to his nephews Giacomo and Sozzo di Andrea, who financed the foundation of the church where the head originally was set.
