The Health Hydro was built in 1891-2 as the Great Western Railway (GWR) Medical Fund Baths and Dispensary. A medical fund had been established by GWR workers in 1847 with fees taken directly from workers' wages.
The Baths and Dispensary brought together various Medical Fund provisions under one roof, housing two swimming pools, consultation rooms and a dispensary. An extension built in 1904 added Turkish Baths to the complex.
