In 2007, the Museum merged with HealthSpace Cleveland (formerly the Cleveland Health Museum), putting the spotlight on a new area of research and educational interest.
When the two organizations combined, we inherited the rich legacy of the first health museum in the United States. Our mission was broadened to include this new focus, and in 2014 the Department of Human Health & Evolutionary Medicine was founded with Dr. Nicole Burt as curator.
The Museum gained 12 new employees through the merger, several of whom remain on staff today. The merger also expanded on HealthSpace’s educational programs for Greater Cleveland schools and brought distance learning to the Museum. Our award-winning virtual programming has continued to grow in the years since.
During the transition, the Museum’s collections absorbed a number of HealthSpace’s educational props. Our most notable acquisition was Juno, a transparent female figure used to illustrate human anatomy. Designed in a workshop in Germany in the 1950s, this unique learning tool has inspired students for decades.
