True Love? The Greek Philosopher Plato distinguished between two kinds of love: a heavenly, spiritual form and an earthly, sensual one. Heavenly love was best. Scheffer depicts this literally with heavenly love looking down at earthly love. This work was exhibited in Dordrecht in 1854. It proved a little too daring for some: one lady ran away screaming.
