Since prehistoric times (4th century BC) the hedgehog has enjoyed great popularity as it symbolizes nature at peace. In the Old Kingdom it appeared in portrayals of the countryside on reliefs, in the Middle Kingdom it was often a small figure in tomb equipment, and in the New Kingdom it again appeared in tomb paintings. Scaraboids and vessels shaped as hedgehogs also exist. However, the hedgehog had no religious meaning.
