In the first half of 1953 (year this picture was probably taken), Villa-Lobos toured several European countries, Greece, Italy, Austria, Sweden, France, Portugal, Spain, among others, and then left for the United States, where he conducted the Los Angeles Philharmonic Orchestra at the Hollywood Bowl, at the time the largest open-air auditorium in the world.
